@emily: yeah, i think my sanity was on the run as well. but hopefully i’ve regained enough to be functional at school tomorrow. @kira: it’s been gone for a while… and i can’t remember if my name is in it. can i see it tomorrow? if you have it that would pretty much make my week.  i hope i find all the things on my list. and don’t add too many more.

now i'm glad i wrote it all down
all semester i’ve typed up all my study guides before putting them on my notecard. all semester, people said it was pointless to put in all the extra effort, since i didn’t even put everything i wrote on my notecard. guess again, my friends. now that the final is here, i can put them all in one big document and search for the words i want, like “arrhenius” or...

it's quite overwhelming how much i don't want to...
but alas i guess i should. i’ve procrastinated enough— our written final is on thursday. it’s close enough that i should be studying yet far enough that i am totally unmotivated. we’ll see how well this pans out, but the thought of doing chemistry is just revolting.

fun at the bookstore
i’ve not been to a book store in a long time, so when we went today it was really fun. i like book stores. however, the teen fiction books suck. they all fall in to three categories, for the most part: random book that no one’s ever heard of or would ever want to read, books about mean girls living in some big city who complain about other girls stealing their boyfriends, or...

conspiracy theories 9/11 style
i just finished watching a two-hour show on 9/11 conspiracy theories. it was verrrry interesting. the conspiracy theories are interesting… mostly saying that because every single stinking detail has not been explained or that every single stinking detail does not fit what these random, non-expert people would think is acceptable. they have no idea what they’re talking about, but yet...

insane hairdressers
today i got a hair cut. i got it shorter because it’s summer soon, so now it’s about at my shoulders. my hair is pretty curly when it’s really short, and my hairdresser decided that she was going to make it as curly as possible. sighhhhh. she put this awful gunk in my hair that was supposed to make it stay curly (now my fingers stick together if i touch it, jeez.) and it was...

oh shruthi,
you might thing that you “owned” me, but you’d be wrong. first, i’m using my cookie money to get there, smart one.  second, it takes a lot more than the few hundred dollars i’ve made to install wifi on a bunch of islands miles off the coast of ecuador— where there are only about 300,000 people. efficient? i think not. third, if i were to be poisoned, i would...

no, i am not bringing any poisonous plants back from ecuador.  can’t put them in my bag, x-ray will catch them can’t put them on my person, i’ll die of the poison can’t get the antidote, i’ll be without internet access plus that’s just stupid. owned? not me. sorry.

today i actually enjoyed myself (shocking). besides my two mini heart attacks, of course (french and cellphone… phew). i went to ana’s house after school and we watched dear john and drank russian tea that was actually british. it was pretty good, and it made her day that i was all hard core and didn’t use any sugar. the movie was okay… the first half was better than the...

mottos to live by
If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried. A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking. Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it. For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism. He who hesitates is probably right. Never do card tricks for the group you play poker with. No one...

Paying Homage to Mrs. Auch
The STENTORIAN voices carried the INCANTATIONS through the crowd. The witches, as they were labeled by the wary townspeople, walked through the gathering with COPIOUS numbers of amulets and talismans hanging off their traditional robes. They were considered by the tiny town to be bound for PERDITION; their tribal religion was very much out of line with the Christian views of the town’s only place...

buddhist extremists →
well so much for the no buddhist extremists theory. it took me about 30 seconds to find some… i had no idea they were out there. and for those hindhus in the audience, here’s another link: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article5186703.ece no religion is without fault. it’s kind of a depressing thought.

yeah, i know, i’ve posted a lot of links lately. but i read these articles and decided to share them. sighhh… religious extremists are messing everything up. moderately religious people are not the problem, they are just getting a bad rep. if religion makes you a nicer person or gives you hope, then i think it’s a really good thing. the problem is people who are too caught up in...

you know what i love?
how i always become so popular right before an essay is due.  when i go online, it’s always “hey ellen, what’s up?” we chat. then, the  ”hey, do you want to grade my essay?” comes inevitably. now i know at least one person’s gonna have to comment and say how no one likes me for anything but my editing. yes, you can have at it, but you’ll be wrong....

@abdul: i was more referring to the vast population of people who think girl scouts are all dorky. you just made me think of it. :D @the world: girl scouts are not dorky. at least, not all of them. yes, i agree, the girl scouts who sell nuts and earn badges and wear uniforms and say girl scout pledges are exceedingly dorky. i would not be caught dead in an official girl scout uniform. my girl...

… i will be in ecuador. quito, ecuador, at this very moment, i think. yesterday (in one month) i will have flown to miami to meet all the other girls i am going to travel with. tomorrow i will go to the galapagos islands. yeah, those galapagos islands. iguanas and giant tortoises and penguins. the real thing. see? take that, girl scout haters. i, a girl scout, get to go to ecuador on a girl...

religious tolerance →
aaaand if you’ve got too much time on your hands and feel like reading more articles, here’s another good one. it’s not as long this time, i promise. and this guy (a dalai lama) has got a view that the jews and muslims in israel and the west bank should embrace.

zionism and the israeli-arab conflict →
this is a pretty good article. it’s long—and i mean long—but it addresses a lot of things we’ve been talking about in core. it’s biased towards the palestinians, though it was written by an orthodox jew.  i am definitely leaning towards the palestinians on this particular conflict. not being a religious person i cannot understand the jews’ need for the sacred...

men in skirts
well, the maker faire was fun. and yes, “faire” has an “e” on the end.  there was lots of cool stuff. there were homeopathic hula hoops, bikes that had been cut in half and glued back together backwards, and tons of weird but cool art, from sculptures made out of soda bottles to cars decorated with fur. there was also a lot of techonology stuff, like computers or...

today we are going to the maker’s faire. you might remember it from the tech challenge… they were the ones with the little blue lights. my family’s gone for the past few years. it’s pretty much the geekiest place on the planet, but it’s really fun. really cool robots, life-sized mouse traps, and merchandising galore… i wonder what cool things we’ll see...

joy/sadness
the school year is almost over. of course, i can’t wait for summer… sleeping in, no homework, traveling. but i am still terrified of the fact that this year is almost over. this year has been really great. yes, i’ve had a heck of a lot of homework and some less-than-stellar teachers, but overall this was one of the best years i’ve ever had. i’ve made so many friends,...

my theory
so i’ve been paying attention in core this year. we’ve not gotten to pick our groups for any substantial projects yet this year, so i’ve formed a hypothesis about how they make our groups. we already know they are heterogeneous (blatantly obvious), but there is a system for how they make the groups. in groups of four, there is one smart person, two average people, and one...

someone else's kid
today in class, my teacher told us a story about her son. basically, when he was born, he had a tumor that wouldn’t stop bleeding. there were times when she didn’t think he was going to make it. she said that her son lived because of the massive amounts of donated blood he used.  it was really sad. she’s one of my favorite teachers, and it was really heartbreaking to hear that...

ellen, the one with no name
i’ve been called kira, megan, susan, allen, elaina, helen, erica, erin, and countless other names. i was wrong in thinking “ellen” wasn’t that hard of a name. at least once a year a sub calls me “allen” and then is surprised when a girl answers. a couple years ago a teacher made the mistake of putting an allen, elena, alina, and i all at the same table. boy,...
